2014 CSA distribution #19

Minimalist newsletter this week, as Eric is doing double duty while Joanna is away celebrating a family wedding. This means that herbs will be limited on Monday, and Thursday’s survey, which usually goes out Monday afternoon, will be delayed until Monday night or Tuesday morning. Because of cool weather (and possibly an early frost this weekend), share contents are especially uncertain.

NEW! Mustard/collard greens mix Yummy sauteed with garlic & drizzled with balsamic vinegar.
NEW! Kale
New! Hakurei turnips
Nice mild turnips, cook as you might carrots.
NEW! Lettuce mix
A small amount of young leaf lettuce.

Green beans? Yields uncertain.
Sweet peppers

Garlic Samarkand
Summer squash? Yields uncertain.
If enough mature fast enough in the cool weather

Joanna, manager & harvester of herbs, will be traveling to celebrate a family wedding, so there will be a minimalist herb selection for Monday of distribution 19 (Sept. 15).

Full shares will receive up to 4 herbs & single shares up to 2.  If you want to maximize the number of herbs you receive, please follow the survey directions (no more than 2 “yes” request for full shares and no more than 1 “yes” request for singles, and enough “sure” responses to give us some flexibility in rounding out what you receive). Also, please remember to fill you your survey in order to receive herbs!

Here are the expected choices:

Dill leaf (Th)
Thai Red Roselle
(Mo, Th) This is the plant used to make hibiscus tea; follow the link for guidance on how to use these.
Cayenne (Mo, Th) These small red peppers can be hung & dried, or used to add nice flavor to sauces.
Serrano peppers
(Mo, Th) Nice fruity flavor.
Jalapeno peppers (Mo, Th)
Habanero peppers
(Mo, Th) These hot! orange peppers have a lovely fruity flavor if you can handle the heat.
Cutting celery
Dill heads (Th)
Genovese/sweet basil (Th) Available if it makes it through the cold nights okay.
Lime basil (Th) Available if it makes it through the cold nights okay.
Sage (Th)
Mint (Th)
Maybe?? Cilantro (Th)
Joanna will need to check the status of the plants when she returns. Make sure to provide backup choices in case we can’t fill requests for this one.

There will be no eggs this week, other than fulfilling some backorders. You will be notified directly if we’ll have eggs for you.
